Naomi Roswell: Co-Chair and Langston Site Leader

Hello! I’m Naomi Roswell. I’m a second year at Oberlin College and I’m really excited to be a part of Girls in Motion at Langston Middle School this year. We are constantly dancing from the minute we wake up and get of bed and brush our teeth, to laughing with friends, and doing homework. Our movement has meaning, and dance is just an exaggeration of that. I’ve taken ballet and modern classes and performed with a post-modern company in Washington DC, but I’m constantly imagining new choreographies and I can’t wait to collaborate with people of different ages to create dances. I’m also interested in biology and ecology, learning languages, and being outside!

Sakina Lavingia

Sakina is a fourth year international student from Karachi, Pakistan, majoring in Politics and Economics with a minor in Dance. She trained in Odissi, an Indian classical dance style for six years before coming to Oberlin, and worked with students extensively through the process. She has been working with Girls and Boys in Motion since her first semester at Oberlin.

Molly Steimle: Treasurer

My name is Molly and I am a third year chemistry or biochemistry major at Oberlin College. This is my fourth  semester with Girls in Motion, last semester I was a mentor at Langston. I’ll be mentoring at Prospect this semester and I am very excited! I started dance as a very young girl and have loved it ever since. I also played volleyball in middle school and high school and have enjoyed doing lots of yoga for the past couple of years. I am really interested in developing a deeper appreciation for everything that my body can do and hope to continue learning this semester! In addition to moving, I love playing the cello, hanging out with friends and reading in my free time!

Emma Kilbourne Rast: Prospect Site Leader

Emma Rast is a third year at Oberlin college, potentially majoring in environmental studies. In the past she has worked with elementary students as a music educator but is so excited to begin working with movement and dance. In her free time Emma enjoys playing cello, gardening, and contra dancing.

Kyla Van Gelder:

Kyla Vangelder is a second year Comparative American Studies and Dance double major. She is brand new to Girls in Motion and is so excited to be working at Langston Middle School. Kyla has been dancing for as long as she can remember and has explored many different styles of dance and movement practice. Kyla works at movement summer camps for young people that encourage movement work as a way for young people to find their own strength and presence within their bodies and make meaningful connections with each other. Kyla strongly believes in the power of movement to help empower young girls to love their bodies.
